They are stunning, wonderfully fragrant, very resilient, home friendly and, as orchids go, very easy to grow and care for.

Phal orchids, as they are commonly referred to, are also known as moth orchids because of their similar shape when in full bloom. It’s almost guaranteed that if you’ve been to a wedding recently then you’ve probably seen some of these elegant flowers displayed.

Phalaenopsis is a genus of orchids that includes about 60 species and countless hybrid variations. There are new hybrids being cultivated all the time as global demand for these beautiful plants has made a highly profitable market for commercial orchid growers. Phal’s come in white, pink, yellow, lavender, and many are striped. When in full bloom their flowers can range from 2″ to 5″ in diameter depending on the species.

Growing a Phalaenopsis in your home is very rewarding and can be a great confidence boost if you’re new to orchid growing. Lets look at some essential guidelines to growing these lovely flowers.

Type and Environment

Phalaenopsis orchids are epiphytic, meaning that they use other trees, plants, or rocks to hold themselves up. As a result, their roots are commonly exposed to the air in the natural environment. This is important to remember because you need to emulate this at home. Using a bamboo stick is an easy way to replicate this support. Phal’s are most commonly found in tropical climates of the world, although there are a few mountain-dwelling species. Because of this, they are used to high humidity levels.

Water & Humidity

You will want to replicate this high moisture content as best as you can at home. Aim for an optimal humidity of 70% if possible. If you have a humidifier this can simplify the process because you can easily measure the humidity. Other ways to increase the air moisture content are to place your Phal on a humidity tray, or one of my favorites is to place several potted Phal’s in close proximity to each other.

I recommend watering your Phalaenopsis orchids about once every 7 to 10 days. You do not want to over-water them as this will sabotage all of your efforts. In general, the potting media should be dry before the next watering.

Light & Temperature

Phalaenopsis orchids are low-light orchids. I find that Phal’s work best when placed in an east or west-facing window. This allows them to great bright morning or evening light that isn’t super intense. If you choose to use artificial lights, consider using fluorescents timed to emulate the natural daylight. Place the artificial lights about a foot above your plant. If the leaves have a nice green color and firm texture then they are properly lighted.

As I mentioned before, many Phal’s come from warm, tropical climates. They like warmth so you want to make sure they get it at home. It’s best not to exceed daytime temperatures of 85 F or nighttime lows of 65F.

The Reward

If you follow these simple guidelines you can be on your way to growing beautiful Phalaenopsis orchids in no time. Once they begin to bloom, make sure and display them proudly. Their blooms can last for up to 3 months!
